Get into the holiday spirit with this simple DIY gingerbread house garland!

If you’re anything like me you can get a bit overzealous about all the things you want to do and/or make for the holidays. This DIY is absolutely the easiest and quickest one you’ll do this season and will add such a beautiful handmade touch to your home decor.

This is such a perfect holiday craft for so many reasons.

  • Very budget friendly
  • Simple and short list of materials
  • Kid friendly craft
  • More eco friendly
  • Adds such charm to your home

By the end of this post I hope to inspire you to get creative and make a beautiful DIY gingerbread house garland of your own.

To Make Your DIY Gingerbread Garland You’ll Need:

  1. Scraps of cardboard/ cardboard boxes (I used the cardboard backing that came with some photos I ordered online)
  2. Candy cane Twine
  3. Pencil
  4. Scissors or box cutter
  5. White acrylic paint marker or a white sharpie
  6. Single hole puncher
  7. Ruler (optional)

Cutting and designing your gingerbread houses

Now the fun begins. There is definitely no precise science to this; I wanted this garland to be quick and easy so I eyeballed about how large I wanted my houses to be and then used the first house of that style as a template for the rest.

However, if you’d like some measurements my gingerbread houses were about 5 inches tall and 4 inches wide give or take. I cut out 4 different house shapes; a taller skinny house, traditional short gingerbread house, cottage style and a sort of victorian style. (see photo below for reference) There were a total of 9 houses which I thought allowed the garland to be a nice length for hanging over a fireplace or over an archway.

Once you’ve cut out your shapes then you’ll draw your design with a white acrylic paint marker or sharpie. A quick google search will give you plenty of examples for inspiration or feel free to use mine to give you ideas on how to decorate them! Once you’re happy with your designs, take a single hole puncher and punch a hole through the highest point.

Assembling your gingerbread house garland

Next step is to assemble your garland. I wanted the houses to hang below the twine so I tied a small loop first; as if they were going to be ornaments on the tree. Then I ran a long line (about 2 ft) of twine through the loops and tied each loop to the longer line. The reason you want to tattach them to the longer line is so that your houses don’t go sliding together once you hang them up. Make sure that your individual ornament loops have enough extra twine after you knot them to make attaching to the longer line easier.

That’s it! Quick and easy afternoon craft to do with your children, if they’re a bit older, or during your little ones nap time. I hope you’ve found some inspiration with this DIY gingerbread house garland for your handmade home. Remember holiday decor doesn’t have to be expensive or extravagant to create special memories. Let me know if you try this one.

She enjoyed this one and didn’t try to taste it too much. 👌🏼 Super easy to make but it’s a sticky one; had to hose her down afterwards.

The flower patch is really starting to crank out b The flower patch is really starting to crank out blooms. Things I’ve learned so far.
1. I have too many bed hogs/ slow growers in a very limited amount of space.
2. The dahlias, celosia and snapdragons have a longer maturity time and I should have started them well before the rest.
3. Rabbits like to eat baby dahlias and I suspect sunflowers too.
4. I should have used a fish emulsion to fertilize. The plants feel smaller than they could be.
5. Planting the sunflowers and dahlias on the north side of the patch made sense because they grow the tallest, but it’s also the side of the patch that gets the most shade which is no good.

That’s all for now. Really loving this process. 💐

My first hand at making everyday loaves of bread. My first hand at making everyday loaves of bread. I’ll admit I’ve avoided sourdough bread because it intimidates me and it just seems like a lot of work. I’ll jump in eventually but for now this yeast bread recipe gives that beautiful artisanal feel and is so so easy. And well to get high quality english muffins at the store it’s $5 for a pack of 6. It’s so much cheaper to make them yourself. Let me know if you try either of these.

EVERYDAY LOAF
- 3 cups (450g) flour , bread or plain/all purpose
- 2 tsp instant or rapid rise yeast (for active dry yeast )
- 2 tsp cooking kosher salt
- 1 1/2 cups (375 ml) very warm tap water (130°F)
- 1 1/2 tbsp flour , for dusting
Directions
1. Mix flour, yeast and salt in a large bowl. Add water, then use the handle of a wooden spoon to mix until all the flour is incorporated. Dough will be wet and sloppy – not kneadable, but not runny like cake batter. Adjust with more water or flour if needed for right consistency
2. Cover with cling wrap or plate, leave on counter for 2 – 3 hours until it doubles in volume, it’s wobbly like jelly and the top is bubbly. If after 1 hour it doesn’t seem to be rising, move it somewhere warmer.
3. Put dutch oven in oven with lid on (10” or larger). Preheat to 450°F 30 minutes prior to baking.
4. Sprinkle work surface with 1 tbsp flour, scrape dough out of bowl. Sprinkle top with 1/2 tbsp flour. Using a dough scraper or anything of similar shape (cake server, large knife, spatula), fold the sides inwards (about 6 folds) to roughly form a roundish shape.
5. Slide a large piece of parchment/baking paper next to the dough, then flip the dough upside down onto the paper (ie seam side down, smooth side up). Slide/push it towards the middle, then reshape it into a round(ish) shape.
6. Remove hot dutch oven from oven. Use paper to place dough into pot, place lid on.
7. Bake 30 minutes covered, then 12 minutes uncovered or until deep golden.
8. Cool on rack for 10 minutes before slicing.

Visited a u-pick strawberry field today and loaded Visited a u-pick strawberry field today and loaded up on some beautiful fresh strawberries. It felt so good to see a farm stand in action, it fuels my dreams and keeps me focused on creating my own one day. The season ends in April so I’ll be back to collect more berries soon. My plan is to pick enough to freeze for smoothies, can strawberry jam, dehydrate some to add into granola and make some fresh treats too. 🍓

It was such a big deal to me to practice how to water bath can and for it to come out successful my first time. Water bath canning intimidated me for a while.
