How to Create an Intentional Mother’s Morning Basket

It’s likely you’ve heard of the morning basket for homeschooling children but what about a mothers morning basket?

mother's morning basket

The concept of the morning basket stems from homeschooling. I will admit I am an eager beaver when it comes to homeschooling, yes my toddler is barely a toddler. Although we aren’t at the point where a morning basket makes sense for her, I knew I wanted a morning basket for me.

In this post I’m going to share what’s in my mothers morning basket, why you should consider having one and help you create your perfect basket to bring beauty, truth and goodness to your day.

Why should mother’s have a morning basket?

Just because we have left school doesn’t mean we stop learning. It is so important to lead by example and if you, like me, would like to homeschool your children one day then its never too early to start forming good habits for yourself. The morning basket is a curated collection of books and journals to help you start the day with intentionality and focus. They usually include things like Bible studies, journals, notebooks, and various books to expand your knowledge and enrich the soul. Starting your day like this is very powerful. You nourish yourself to be able to give your best to others. This is why I think a mother’s morning basket is so beneficial.

What to include in your mothers morning basket:

Let me start by saying that everything is optional. The idea is to include items that will inspire and enrich your days. This is not intended to be an exhaustive list and you by no means need to have everything to have a “perfect” basket. Shoot it doesn’t even need to be in a basket! I’ve divided the list into three areas of growth; spiritual, knowledge and self. I’d say as you create your own curated collection, chose at least one from each category to start your basket. You can always add more. Take what resonates and leave the rest!

Spiritual

In recent years I’ve realized how weak my relationship with God is and it’s something I’ve been working on. It’s difficult for me to say that because it can feel like everyone in this corner of the internet are exceptionally devout Christians. While I feel imposter syndrome creep in sometimes, I know that Jesus is for everyone, especially those of us at the beginning of our journey.

  • A Bible
  • Devotional
  • Bible Studies
  • Prayer/ Scripture Cards
  • Prayer Journal

Knowledge

When it comes to this category I like to reference a well known quote in the Charlotte Mason community regarding books to keep in rotation as a mother-teacher. In a Parent’s review article in 1892 the author states:

“The wisest woman I ever knew–the best wife, the best mother, the best mistress, the best friend–told me once, when I asked her how, with her weak health and many calls upon her time, she managed to read so much, “I always keep three books going–a stiff book, a moderately easy book, and a novel, and I always take up the one I feel fit for!”

Therefore for this category I encourage you to try a rotation of books that serve different purposes.

  • Stiff book – a book either challenging in concept or vocabulary/language. I would also include any books in which you are trying to learn something new in this category as well.
  • Easy book– Many inspirational books and non fiction/ self help books would fall into this category.
  • Novel– A work of fiction that allows you to get lost in the story.

Self

Items here are designed to help you reflect and apply knowledge to yourself for that is where the growth happens. Of course, a planner is my favorite way to complete my basket as it naturally transitions me from my basket to the rest of my to do’s for the day.

  • Gratitude journals
  • Common Place journal – if you aren’t familiar with the concept of a common place journal, I have a post here all about it.
  • Planner

What’s in my morning basket?

Now that you have an idea of what kind of items to include I’ll show you what I currently have in my basket and give you some more specific ideas!

Tried some homemade finger paint today with little Tried some homemade finger paint today with little A. She is 18 months old and still occasionally tastes her art supplies. She enjoyed this one and didn’t try to taste it too much. 👌🏼 Super easy to make but it’s a sticky one; had to hose her down afterwards.

The flower patch is really starting to crank out b The flower patch is really starting to crank out blooms. Things I’ve learned so far.
1. I have too many bed hogs/ slow growers in a very limited amount of space.
2. The dahlias, celosia and snapdragons have a longer maturity time and I should have started them well before the rest.
3. Rabbits like to eat baby dahlias and I suspect sunflowers too.
4. I should have used a fish emulsion to fertilize. The plants feel smaller than they could be.
5. Planting the sunflowers and dahlias on the north side of the patch made sense because they grow the tallest, but it’s also the side of the patch that gets the most shade which is no good.

That’s all for now. Really loving this process. 💐

My first hand at making everyday loaves of bread. My first hand at making everyday loaves of bread. I’ll admit I’ve avoided sourdough bread because it intimidates me and it just seems like a lot of work. I’ll jump in eventually but for now this yeast bread recipe gives that beautiful artisanal feel and is so so easy. And well to get high quality english muffins at the store it’s $5 for a pack of 6. It’s so much cheaper to make them yourself. Let me know if you try either of these.

EVERYDAY LOAF
- 3 cups (450g) flour , bread or plain/all purpose
- 2 tsp instant or rapid rise yeast (for active dry yeast )
- 2 tsp cooking kosher salt
- 1 1/2 cups (375 ml) very warm tap water (130°F)
- 1 1/2 tbsp flour , for dusting
Directions
1. Mix flour, yeast and salt in a large bowl. Add water, then use the handle of a wooden spoon to mix until all the flour is incorporated. Dough will be wet and sloppy – not kneadable, but not runny like cake batter. Adjust with more water or flour if needed for right consistency
2. Cover with cling wrap or plate, leave on counter for 2 – 3 hours until it doubles in volume, it’s wobbly like jelly and the top is bubbly. If after 1 hour it doesn’t seem to be rising, move it somewhere warmer.
3. Put dutch oven in oven with lid on (10” or larger). Preheat to 450°F 30 minutes prior to baking.
4. Sprinkle work surface with 1 tbsp flour, scrape dough out of bowl. Sprinkle top with 1/2 tbsp flour. Using a dough scraper or anything of similar shape (cake server, large knife, spatula), fold the sides inwards (about 6 folds) to roughly form a roundish shape.
5. Slide a large piece of parchment/baking paper next to the dough, then flip the dough upside down onto the paper (ie seam side down, smooth side up). Slide/push it towards the middle, then reshape it into a round(ish) shape.
6. Remove hot dutch oven from oven. Use paper to place dough into pot, place lid on.
7. Bake 30 minutes covered, then 12 minutes uncovered or until deep golden.
8. Cool on rack for 10 minutes before slicing.

It felt so good to see a farm stand in action, it fuels my dreams and keeps me focused on creating my own one day. The season ends in April so I’ll be back to collect more berries soon. My plan is to pick enough to freeze for smoothies, can strawberry jam, dehydrate some to add into granola and make some fresh treats too. 🍓
